Volusia County’s oldest hospital still in operation recently held a 90th-anniversary celebration for its 4,000 employees in three counties.
Halifax District Hospital in Daytona Beach was officially opened Jan. 3, 1928, with 125 beds, 40 of which were in private rooms, and a 22-member nursing staff. Julia May Leach served as the hospital’s first administrator.
Since that time, what is now called Halifax Health has experienced tremendous growth. The community health system now provides a continuum of health care services through a network of organizations, including two hospitals in Daytona Beach and Port Orange, a free-standing emergency department in Deltona, an urgent-care facility in Ormond Beach, and a number of primary-care offices across Volusia and Flagler counties.
Halifax Health also offers home health care, a cancer-treatment center with five outreach locations, psychiatric services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, children’s medical practices, a pediatric community clinic, an exclusive provider organization, and hospice care in Volusia, Flagler and Orange counties.
In addition, Halifax Health offers the area’s only Level II trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center, a pediatric intensive-care unit, a pediatric emergency department, child and adolescent behavioral services, complete neurosurgical services, an obstetric emergency department, and a Level II neonatal intensive-care unit that cares for babies born as early as 28 weeks.
Coming by 2020 is another hospital that’s under construction next to the free-standing emergency department in Deltona. And Halifax owns about 7 acres on Deltona’s east side, at the intersection of Howland Boulevard and State Road 415, although there are no current plans to develop that land while the hospital is being built.
“For 90 years, Halifax Health has been honored to serve our Volusia County communities with the highest quality of health care delivered compassionately by our talented team of physicians, nurses and other skilled clinicians. As our communities and their health care needs have grown, so has Halifax Health, in order that necessary health care services would be available to all,” said Chief Communications Officer Ann Martorano. “It is our honor to be the community’s health care leader, and we look forward to many more years of bringing leading-edge talent and technology to the residents we serve.”
